Art
- Art provides a valuable means of communication through visual images,
and encourages students to develop their creativity and imaginations.
- Students experience activities which vary in degrees of freedom and control, and provide
opportunities to explore with a variety of media.
- The concepts, elements and vocabulary of art are presented
with age appropriate activities.
- Art provides insight into each child’s development and can enhance growth in all
areas.
- Students explore the artworks of
famous artists and they are encouraged to incorporate some of the ideas into their own pieces of work.
Language Arts
- Integrated approaches to language develop the
child's potential as a reader and a writer.
- Word attck skills, including phonics, are taught during
the early stages of instruction.
- Reading is done for pleasure, for information and for critical
thinking.
- Language instruction integrates spelling, writing,
grammer and handwriting.
- Learned skills are put into practice with an
emphasis on writing.
- Literature, poetry and writings of well-known authors are
explored.
Life Skills ~Awareness Activities
- Group activities are conducted by skilled adult volunteer
facilitators.
- Active listening is practiced.
- Diversity is celebrated.
- Younger students are helped to recognize their own feelings.
- Intermediate students are challenged to build

- Older students learn conflict resolution techniques and
mentor younger children.
- Children
receive daily instruction at an appropriate academic level.

- Manipulatives are used to augment the sequential
math program.
- Mastery of concrete skills leads to effective application
in broader concepts.
- The math program at Oakwood School is coordinated
with junior high schools to ensure a smooth transition to seventh grade.

Music
- Skills are taught and reinforced through a wide variety
of musical experiences.
- Studying composers and exploring music of all eras is part
of the total music program.

- Rhythm and percussion instruments, and recorders are used
as an exciting way to experience the joy of making music.

Physical Education
Science and Health
- Science is a means of learning about the world in which we live. The sciences are taught through exploration, discovery
and observation while the scientific method is reinforced through hands-on activities. The sequential science program builds
on previously learned skills.
- Field trips, visiting professionals, career exploration
and special projects are used to enrich the learning experience.
- Age-appropriate and relevant health issues include:
nutrition and disease prevention, first aid and safety, physical and emotional wellness, body systems, current health topics,
drug, alcohol and tobacco awareness.
- Health Education helps children make safe and healthy choices that will have beneficial effects on their lives.
- Older students are encouraged to participate in the annual science fair through
involvement in an individual project.
Social Studies
- Students learn about social units: family, community, state, country and the world.
- Sequential history units are emphasized.
- Geographical terms, concepts, and themes are used
to familiarize students with our world.
- International themes are an important aspect of the
social studies curriculum.
- The social studies help children develop fully as
individuals with positive self esteem.
- The spotlight on other cultures includes the study
of language, customs, traditions, food, dance, music and art.
- Families are invited to celebrations marking the culmination of each school
wide cultural unit.
Spanish
- Children have a natural ear for languages and a huge curiosity for new vocabularies.
- Learning about cultures and their languages helps children better understand themselves and others.
Children have an enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, and open perceptions about diverse
ideas and cultural practices.
